Santiago Perez-Bernal successfully defended his PhD thesis
We would like to congratulate Santiago Perez-Bernal, who successfully defended his PhD thesis last Thursday. Santiago has investigated the effects of mycorrhizal fungi as biofertilizers in intercropping systems in the semi arid tropics. He found that intercropping can increase the yields of finger millets and legumes when these are grown in combination rather than alone. What is more, he was able to demonstrate in a large field experiment in India, that these intercropping effects are significantly enhanced when AMF containing biofertilizers are applied to the field. With this, Santiago has contributed important new insight into approaches that can allow the sustainable improvement yields in low-input agriculture.
