We recently published a complete, revised classification for the cactus family, based on new phylogenomic data for 170 species. The paper — JM de Vos, U. Eggli, et al., Phylogenomics and classification of Cactaceae based on hundreds of nuclear genes (Plant Systematics and Evolution) — has already been accessed more than 1300 times within its first three weeks online, showing strong interest in the work. Together with colleagues from the Sukkulenten-Sammlung Zürich, the University of Zurich, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, we revisted whether previous classifications adequately reflected evolutionary relationships and proposed a more robust alternative. The result is a 53-page paper including extensive phylogenetic analyses and a formal taxonomic treatment, offering new clarity for this charismatic group of plants.
