A new paper in eco-hydrology appeared this week
In the paper we report on a study where we used deuterium labeled water to assess the infiltration of a precipitation event into a temperate forest ecosystem. We found that the label water infiltrated the system rapidly. Also, the trees used the water rapidly but different trees took up the label from different soil depths. In summary, our study provides a little evidence for a separation of mobile and non-mobile water in the soil of a temperate forest and clearly indicates different water uptake depths of different co-occurring temperate tree species.
